Choosing flooring for a home with kids and pets is a practical decision as much as an aesthetic one. Beautiful hardwood is magnificent — until the dog scratches it and the toddler spills juice on it repeatedly. Here’s an honest look at the most popular flooring options for Triangle-area families.
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)
LVP is the most popular choice we install for busy family homes, and for good reason. It’s:
- 100% waterproof — spills, splashes, and wet paws are completely fine
- Scratch-resistant — dog nails won’t leave marks the way they do on hardwood
- Durable — commercial-grade options hold up to heavy foot traffic
- Easy to clean — sweep and damp mop, done
- Mid-range cost — installed cost is typically lower than hardwood or quality tile
The main limitation: it can’t be refinished like hardwood, so when it wears out, it needs to be replaced. Quality LVP typically lasts 15–25 years with normal family use.
Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood is beautiful and adds significant home value, but requires more care in family settings. It’s susceptible to scratching, moisture, and denting. In NC’s humid climate, solid hardwood can expand and contract seasonally. Engineered hardwood handles humidity better than solid and is refinishable. If you love hardwood, consider installing it in lower-traffic rooms (bedrooms, formal dining) and using LVP in high-traffic living areas.
Laminate Flooring
Laminate is harder than LVP (more scratch-resistant) but not waterproof — standing moisture can damage the core. Good quality laminate is a solid budget option for dry areas. It’s not recommended for bathrooms or kitchens where floor moisture is a regular occurrence.
Tile
Ceramic and porcelain tile is extremely durable and waterproof — ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways. It’s not comfortable underfoot for long periods and can be cold in winter. It’s also more expensive to install due to labor intensity. For right applications (bathrooms, laundry rooms), it’s hard to beat.
Carpet
Carpet remains popular in bedrooms for comfort and sound dampening. For families with young children, carpet in bedrooms is cozy and practical. In living areas, carpet is increasingly being replaced by LVP for easier cleaning and allergen management.
